#1 Dental Myth: Baby teeth don't matter

ANSWER- Of course they matter-baby teeth can transfer bacteria and affect permanent teeth development

#2 Dental Myth: Flossing is unnecessary

ANSWER- Flossing isn’t as necessary as brushing…..no no no – flossing is a MUST at least once per day. About 30 % is left uncleaned if floss is not used.

#3 Dental Myth: Chewing gum replaces brushing

ANSWER- That’s so wrong. Chewing gum can be used as a food collector after meals just for 10-20 min after each meal but never consider replacing the brushing with chewing gum.

#4 Dental Myth: Brushing harder is better

ANSWER- Harder means trauma – using a soft toothbrush will minimalize this danger. However, there are cases where the specialist may recommend medium brushes. 

#5 Dental Myth: You should rinse after brushing

ANSWER- Rinsing with water after brushing is not recommended since you remove all the good substance that the toothpaste provides. If you want to rinse after brushing a mouthwash is advised as better option. But again never rinse with water after using it.

ANSWER- White teeth has nothing to do with health. Its just a shade tone that each person has its own and can be changed in case someone wants to brighten his/her smile.

ANSWER- We hear this quite often: teeth whitening isn’t safe. But the truth is that using products that you can purchase from your dentist under his/her guidance is safe.

#8 Dental Myth: Sugar damages your teeth

ANSWER- I am pretty sure that most of us have heard from our mom or our grandma: “Sugar causes cavities” or “sugar rots your teeth.” The truth is that using sugary products daily without proper hygiene increases the risk of developing caries (cavities). Sugar is a primary food source for the bacteria that grow in your mouth.

#9 Dental Myth: Bleeding gums are normal

ANSWER- Having bleeding gums for a long time is not normal. Is most probably a disease called gingivitis and needs to be treated as soon as possible.

#10 Dental Myths: Pregnant mothers should avoid the dentist

ANSWER- Of course not. Taking care of your oral hygiene is as important taking care of your nutrient consumption during pregnancy. Bacteria can be transfer to your embryo through the bloodsteam.

ANSWER- X-rays are diagnostic tools that help our diagnosis to be more accurate and prevent unexpected situations for any dental services. 

#12 Dental Myths: Cavities are always painful

ANSWER- No, no. When you have pain due to a cavity, it means that the extent of the decay is very close to the dental pulp (the nerve chamber). If the nerve is involved, this may necessitate a root canal treatment.

#13 Dental Myths: Braces are only for kids

ANSWER- Braces are for all ages; there is no age restriction. If you decide at an older age that you still want straight, good-looking teeth, there is nothing wrong with that!

#14 Dental Myths: Charcoal toothpaste is better for you

ANSWER- Charcoal toothpaste is an option as a toothpaste that is a trend the past few years. It can be used by people with good oral hygiene, not people who have problems with gums or sensitive teeth.

#15 Dental Myths: Fluoride is dangerous

ANSWER. It can be toxic only if you consume a huge amount and you swallow it. Using it in a small amount like a pea size on your toothbrush daily can not be toxic.

#16 Myth: Implants are the same with your natural teeth

ANSWER- Implants can replace missing teeth but they do not have the same physical properties as tooth.

#17 Myth: Veneers destroy your natural teeth

ANSWER- Veneers are an esthetic restoration that are like shells covering the front teeth to improve the shape and colour of your existing teeth. The preparation of our teeth is minimal or no preparation at all, depending on each case.

#18 Myth: Cosmetic dentistry is only for wealthy people

ANSWER – Cosmetic dentistry is for all people; everyone technically has the right to have it. However, the more accurate expression here might be: “Cosmetic dentistry is a luxury that you must be able to afford -:)”

#19 Myth: Crowns last forever or Crowns don’t require care

ANSWERCrowns are durable but not indestructible. With proper care, they last 10–15 years on average, though some last longer. Care needs to be as for a regular tooth. Food for thought: Nothing lasts forever -:)

#20 Myth: Once you get a crown, you can forget about oral hygiene

ANSWER- The tooth underneath can still decay if plaque builds up at the gum line. Crown need the same care as a regular tooth.

#21 Myth: Getting a crown is painful

ANSWER – With modern anesthesia and techniques, the procedure is generally painless.

#22 Myth: Crowns fix all dental problems

ANSWER – Some believe crowns are a cure-all for damaged teeth. Crowns are great for restoration but aren’t always the best solution (sometimes fillings, veneers, or implants are better).

ANSWER – People worry veneers will look too white or obvious. Modern porcelain veneers are custom-designed to match your natural teeth in shape, size, and shade.

#24 Myth: You have to file all your teeth down to stubs

ANSWER – Many think veneers require aggressive tooth reduction. The answer here is only a thin layer of enamel (often less than 1 mm) is removed, and in some cases, no-prep veneers are an option.

ANSWER – It is funny that people still see veneers as an exclusive Hollywood treatment. Veneers are widely available and more affordable than many patients assume. 

#26 Myth: Porcelain veneers are fragile

ANSWER – We heard many times people saying that veneers break easily. But high-quality porcelain veneers are very durable, lasting 10–15 years with proper care.

#27 Myth: : You can’t eat normally with veneers

ANSWER – Some patients fear they’ll have to avoid many foods. Veneers function like natural teeth, only habits like biting ice, hard candy, or opening packages with your teeth should be avoided. 

#28 Myth: Veneers stain easily

ANSWER -Porcelain is stain-resistant, keeping its brightness longer than enamel.
