Porcelain Veneers - FAQ

A porcelain veneer is a thin layer of custom-made ceramic material that is bonded to the front surface of a tooth. It is a cosmetic dental procedure used to improve the appearance of teeth in a variety of ways.

Porcelain veneers can last a surprisingly long time, but the exact lifespan depends on oral hygiene, diet, habits, quality of the porcelain, and soft tissue health and type.

Scheduling a consultation with a dentist is the best way to get a personalized quote based on your specific needs and the dentist’s fees because the cost of a top set of porcelain veneers can vary significantly depending on several factors: price per tooth and number of teeth, cost of living of the area.

With proper oral care and maintenance, porcelain veneers can look quite good after 10 years. The porcelain material is resistant to staining and chipping, so they should continue to blend in well with your surrounding teeth. However, since over time, teeth naturally darken slightly. Veneers may not discolor at the same rate as your natural teeth, leading to a very subtle difference in shade.

In most cases, getting veneers won’t harm the underlying teeth if done correctly by a qualified dentist. However, a thin layer of enamel, usually around half a millimeter, is removed from the front surface of the tooth to create space for the veneer to be bonded securely. As a consequence the enamel removal process might cause some minor sensitivity, but this is usually temporary and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers and/or de-sensitive products.

Both porcelain veneers and dental crowns (often referred to as “porcelain teeth”) are restorations used to improve the appearance and function of teeth, but they have different applications. This may vary according to purpose, benefits, and drawback. For example veneers may not be suitable for severely damaged, fractured, or decayed teeth. However, the bonding of veneer on enamel is stronger than the bonding strength of the crown on dentin.
